Hanging Wall House

Hanging Wall is a 3,600 square foot home concept designed for a steep slope and heavily wooded site in Evergreen, Colorado. The site approach extends along a large front yard, culminating at the entry portal framing the forest view beyond. The house is oriented along the East-West axis to take advantage of passive solar heating in the winter and block the higher summer sun with the large roof overhangs. The living spaces serve as a threshold between the yard on the Southern public side and the private forest experience on the North. The main level bar culminates at the primary suite perched within the tree canopy on the East end, taking advantage of the morning sun and vast views beyond the steep slope.

The entry breezeway is positioned between the guest suite and office on the West end. At the center axis of the portal is an oculus containing native plantings extending through and above the roof plane, connecting the house both horizontally and vertically with the surrounding landscape.

Exterior materials consist of steel panels and dark hemlock slats that create a vertical texture reminiscent of the pine forest trunks surrounding the house. Natural white oak floors, ceilings and cabinetry contrast the exterior creating a warm inviting home.
