Eddy

Situated at the base of Douglas Mountain on a 40-acre site outside of Golden, Colorado, this residence is designed to embrace its dramatic natural surroundings while providing a comfortable, long-term living environment. Oriented to maximize both panoramic southern views of prominent 14ers and passive solar strategies, the home balances sustainability, functionality, and an enduring connection to the landscape.

Designed for aging in place, the residence prioritizes single-level living with an efficient, barrier-free layout that enhances accessibility and ease of movement. Thoughtful design features, including zero-threshold entries, wider circulation paths, and strategically placed lighting, ensure adaptability over time.

The architectural composition is defined by a strong East-West axis, organizing the primary living spaces to optimize solar orientation and natural ventilation. A recessed, south-facing porch, clad in warm wood, creates a protected outdoor refuge while framing a striking view of Mount Blue Sky. This deeply set porch mitigates the impact of high-velocity winter winds, offering both shelter and year-round usability. An overhead roof opening introduces natural light and rain to a garden that serves as a focal point, integrating nature into the heart of the home’s outdoor living space.

The main living area is unified beneath a simple yet highly functional shed roof, designed to regulate seasonal heat gain while providing an ideal surface for a photovoltaic array. Clerestory windows along the northern edge introduce diffused daylight into the primary circulation corridor, reducing the need for artificial lighting while framing views of Douglas Mountain. These windows enhance thermal comfort by promoting passive ventilation and a balanced interior climate.

Material selections and detailing further reinforce the home’s connection to place, emphasizing durability, energy efficiency, and a timeless aesthetic. The integration of passive and active sustainable strategies ensures the home remains comfortable and efficient throughout the seasons, aligning with both environmental responsibility and long-term livability.

DO MORE WITH LESS

Every project begins with a broad set of priorities—design, spatial experience, budget, energy performance, constructability, durability, and more. Our approach is not to solve each challenge with a separate solution, but to distill and simplify, finding ways for one thoughtful move to address multiple needs. By establishing a clear hierarchy, we guide decision-making to create architecture that is both purposeful and enduring.
